Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will commence issuing open work permits to certain spouse or common-law partner in Canada.
You need to meet 4 criteria:
- You have an In-Canada spousal application right now;
- You have a Canadian citizen or PR spouse as a sponsor;
- Both applicant and sponsor reside at the SAME address; and
- Applicant has valid temporary resident status — not an out-of-status spouse!

This is great news. I handed in my spousal pr and open work permit application during the first week of October and received a confirmation letter during the last week of October. Then I became out of status on the 29th of December. How does this news affect me? Thanks
If you applied for In-Canada spousal application (I assume that because you handed in “spousal pr & open work permit”) in October, then you are technically in “implied status” because you filed open work permit before Dec 29. Did you not get your work permit according to December 22nd, 2014 policy? You should if you complied with all four conditions – check out my article on this topic.
