Ask Jennifer: I am a self-employed business; am I qualified to apply under “Self-Employed Class”?

The “Self-Employed Class” in Canadian immigration is a very misunderstood class. It is intended for only three types of candidates; farmers, artists, and athletes.

If you fall under one of those categories then you must be able to prove that you can make an income from your work and that you are recognized as part of that field. Often this process can take 2 to 5 years to finally work, so if you are not very patient then you will want to apply under a different class.
